This animated anthology series presents original stories set in the worlds of iconic video games. Video games have made a huge leap forward onto the screen, and we’re celebrating the genre by taking a closer look at over 50 video game adaptations into films and shows. Clive Standen reprises his voice role as Demetrius Titus, the protagonist of the video game Space Marine 2.
The range of games is mind-boggling
Aside from a few neat sequences, Secret Level feels like a monument to mediocrity. The writing is painfully mediocre, dragging the entire show down despite the undeniably impressive visuals – though they also feel like rehashed remnants of a decade of superior video game cinema. Honestly, what is this show trying to do or say that video game marketing hasn’t done (and done better) in the past 10+ years?
Where are the big names?
The lack of heavy hitters screams one thing: the developers either wanted no part of this train wreck or were waiting to see if Season 1 could hold up. Spoiler alert – it doesn’t. The short-form storytelling seems to be eluding the creators entirely.
What should have been tight, impactful, and memorable comes across as disjointed and uninspired
Variety called it an “uninspired snooze.” And for once, Variety wasn’t harsh enough. Secret Level is proof that flashy visuals can’t cover up a lack of vision, heart, or originality! "One Hundred Years of Solitude" is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month.
