However, I have mixed feelings about it
In Mumbai, nurse Prabha is distraught when she receives an unexpected gift from her estranged husband. Her younger roommate Anu tries in vain to find a place in the city where she can befriend her boyfriend. The first Indian film to win the prestigious Grand Prix at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. After winning the prestigious Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, something no Indian film has ever achieved before, this film is a must-watch.
This is the story of three women in Mumbai, all working in a hospital
Prabha and Anu are nurses – Prabha is simply trying to live her life while waiting for her estranged husband to return, while Anu looks for a place where she can be close to her lover. From the opening scene, you are immersed in the hustle and bustle of Mumbai in its truest form. Payal Kapadia, the director of the film, uses the local train as a recurring motif to portray the city authentically. The usual glitz and glamour of Mumbai is deliberately ignored in favour of the film.
Its tonality tends towards a found footage style that complements the rawness
The climax is ambiguous, making you have to search the scriptures to find out its true meaning. The mix of Hindi and Malayalam enhances the authenticity of the narrative. Kani Kusruti takes centre stage and shines with utmost grace and confidence. Divya Prabha is equally brilliant in her role and gives stiff competition to her co-stars.
These three women together showcase their acting prowess
Though Chhaya Kadam is reminiscent of her character in ‘Laapata Ladies’, she delivers a serious performance in this film too. The film is slow and at times it seems ponderous. While it effectively reflects women’s liberation and reality, it does not break any new ground. The controversy over nudity seems unwarranted considering the lovemaking scene which was crucial to the script.
However, the moment when Divya exposed her mammary glands felt unnecessary
The background music works partially but could have been improved significantly. This film is heavily skewed towards the arthouse category which reduces its entertainment value. It turned out to be strictly average for me – in the so-called ‘poetry in motion’ which didn’t quite resonate.#PranuReviews #AllWeImagineAsLight #AllWeImagineAsLightReview.
