In 1985, devoted Father Bill Furlong uncovers disturbing secrets kept by a local monastery and uncovers shocking truths of his own. He remembers reading her novel "Foster" on the train and having to pull a hoodie over his face because he was crying. Eileen Furlong: If you want to get on in this life, there are things you have to ignore. Introducing 60 Minutes: Crisis at the Red Sea / Fake Elektors / Finding Cillian Murphy (2024).
One of the women at the party told us about her childhood in the hands of nuns in the 1970s
A friend of mine used to own a large gay bar in Dublin, and I remember being there the day marriage was legalized in Ireland. It was a horrific story of women with not a shred of sympathy between them all, and this film picks up that hammer and swings it straight into what is little better than a religious equivalent of a Dickensian workhouse. The story is told by local coal merchant "Bill" (Cillian Murphy), who lives with his wife and five daughters in a small town in Co. Wexford.
resistance or disruption
No one has much money, and some just collect wood from the forest floor to heat their homes. By comparison, his family is doing well and with Christmas approaching, everyone is looking forward to some good family time. He runs a local convent orphanage where unmarried girls from the community are housed when they get in the way of the family, and it is here that he meets a young girl who has been locked in a coal shed. Frozen and horrified, he wonders how he got trapped – and that’s where the story begins to focus not just on the prevailing inhumanity, but also on the inner, web-like sinews of the church, which will not budge.
Can he, though?
If you want a "peaceful life" then you better leave it alone. He is often reminded of his own childhood. One of tragedy, kindness, a hot water bottle and a puzzle. "The Fall" is a troubled man with much to think about, as his conscience refuses to accept societal compromises, even though his wife (Eileen Walsh) might prefer to adopt what she has now seen.
Not an easy watch, but well worth the 90 minutes
This is definitely a less is more film, with effective sparing of dialogue and a sense of anxiety that often transcends its simplicity. The setting shows a degree of menace far more poignantly than any horror film, but this is horror – and a demonstration of cruelty in its most devastatingly subtle form. Murphy shines here, his performance allowing his character to carry us along as we all observe a scenario that might not have been out of place in 1885 – but in 1985?
